I know that the circles attached to furniture is where the people will position themselves when using the item.
I was probably overthinking it, however, when I first placed the furniture for the rooms, it was unclear to me if I should just place the chair over the circles especially for items such as the chair in the classroom. It was also unclear if I should place a chair on the opposite side of the office tables (without the circle), as I didn't know if students would visit teachers in the faculty room to chat.
A final note, I was unsure if the chairs blocked pathfinding until I tested it myself with a fully built school; this lead to my club and canteen layouts having extra space that I wasn't sure I needed. This might confuse new players as happened to me.
